Across the United States, the 2020-2021 legislative sessions saw a new trend of anti-transgender efforts move in state legislatures. Several bills were introduced that sought to restrict access of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth to health care and school-based athletics, relying on disproven notions of who TGD children are and how to improve their health outcomes. These efforts are also inflicting current and life-long harm on the health and well-being of TGD people. In this workshop, we will discuss the common myths and misconceptions about TGD youth, learn more about the future legislative efforts to restrict health and opportunity for this resilient community, and provide recommendations about how health centers can meet the health needs and protect the well-being of TGD patients.
Learning Objectives
Explain evidence regarding the health care needs of TGD youth.
Describe and analyze efforts to restrict the rights and health of TGD youth through legislative means in the US.
Apply strategies for health center leadership, clinicians, and staff to meet the needs of TGD patients and advocate for their well-being amid anti-transgender policy efforts.
