Simply explained, burnout syndrome is emotional exhaustion that causes fatigue, disinterest, and detachment. The American Journal of Medicine reported an increase in physician burnout from 45.5 percent to 54.4 percent over three years. It is now a potential threat to the quality of care delivered and patient safety.
